We depend entirely upon donations including ads for our programs, freewill contributions, and in general the generosity of local individuals and businesses. The MECC also, as a tribute to our contribution to local arts, recently received a generous grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
MECC is open to all who love to sing. No audition is required but some choral music experience is recommended.
We perform two concerts each year, Christmas and Spring, at local churches.
Repertoire includes Classical, Religious, Gospel, Show Tunes and American Standards.
If you would like to join the MECC, please contact us or just show up! Rehearsals are each Monday, August-December and January-April at the First United Presbyterian Church at the junction of 161 and Royal Heights Road in Belleville, Illinois.
(Spring 2002 - Spring 2008; Fall 2013 - present)
Stephen Wilson has been active in choral music as a singer, guitarist, percussionist and director for over 30 years. He originally joined the Chorale as a singer in 1998. Following the untimely death of then director David Ludwig in the Spring of 2002, Wilson became the interim director. In January 2003, he accepted the invitation to become the permanent director. He held this position until Spring 2008, when he stepped down to pursue other interests, then again accepted the directorship in Fall of 2013.
Wilson's past affiliations include the National Association of Pastoral Musicians where he worked on the local and national level as workshop coordinator for programs in liturgy, contemporary ensembles and choral directing. During his tenure as an elementary school music teacher, he was affiliated with the Music Educators National Conference and Illinois Music Educators Association.
As a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Wilson has had the opportunity to work with such prominent choral directors as Eph Ehly (UMKC), Simon Carrington (Yale), Anton Armstrong (St. Olaf) and Joseph Flummerfelt (Westminster Choir College).
Lately, Wilson has been a founding board member of Belleville's premier community theatre group Take A Bow Showcase, where he has been involved as vocal coach, orchestra member and sound design tech. He continues to be active in church music groups at St. Mary's and St. Teresa in Belleville.
Wilson is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where he performed under the direction of Dr. Leonard Van Camp.
Carol Brookshier, accompanist, began working with the Metro-East Community Chorale in May, 2004. Carol studied piano with Lillian Ziska in Belleville for 12 years and graduated from St. Louis Institute of Music in 1961. She served as accompanist with the Southern Illinois Male Chorus for 25 years. She was also director/accompanist of The Proclamations, a young people's choir that toured the southern Illinois area in the 1970s. She is currently Music Director at Crossroads Christian Church in Caseyville.
Carol resides in Troy with her husband, Don and has two children. Her son Christian lives in Oak Park, IL with his wife, Sarabeth, daughter Ava, and son Liam. Her daughter, Meredith, lives in Belleville and has one daughter, Noelle Caroline. Carol also has five stepchildren, Tracy, Becky, Sara, Paul, and Andy, and one stepgrandson, Sam.
